RETIRED U.S. ARMY COLONEL LAWRENCE B. WILKERSON ENDORSES MINDI MESSMER FOR, DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATE FOR 1ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT

PORTSMOUTH, NEW HAMPSHIRE: CD-1 Candidate, NH House Representative Mindi Messmer (District 24) released the following statement today:

I am honored to have this important endorsement supporting my candidacy to represent New Hampshire's 1st District in Congress from Lawrence B. Wilkerson, retired United States Army Colonel and former chief of staff to United States Secretary of State Colin Powell.

Colonel Wilkerson publicly speaks about the National Security threat that climate change and drinking water contamination pose to the United States. It is estimated that 65 million people are refugees worldwide right now due to conflicts likely in part due to climate change. The Department of Defense estimates that 400 million people will be refugees by 2035, if not earlier.

A recent study by the Union of Concerned Scientists concluded that $645M of commercial real estate and 1,900 residences in New Hampshire are at risk due to sea level rise by 2045.

Colonel Wilkerson also speaks publicly about the need to take expedient action since it is literally the difference between life or death. Therefore, we must have a clear plan based on science and evidence to address climate change and sea level rise.

Being a scientist legislator in the statehouse, I now realize how important it will be to have scientists writing policy that will impact the lives of millions in the United States.

Wilkerson says that grassroots movements are at the center of bringing positive climate change.

I look forward to working with Colonel Wilkerson to raise awareness and develop and pass important policy to address these issues on behalf of the people of NH CD-01.

Colonel Wilkerson served 31 years in the Army, then retired from active service and became an advisor to Secretary of State Colin Powell. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Government and Public Policy at William & Mary.
