History will look back upon the tragedy of Parkland as the tipping point for real change.

Dear Friend,

History will look back upon the tragedy of Parkland as the tipping point for real change. My heart goes out to everyone who felt the tragedy.

I thank Mom’s Demand Action for the honor of being recognized as the Gun Sense Candidate of Distinction.

I recently attended a ceremony marking the 50th Anniversary of the 1968 election. Two of my legislator colleagues and congressional campaign supporters, Representatives Chuck Grassie and Renny Cushing, gave impassioned speeches about how at the age of 15 the Vietnam War compelled them to enter a lifelong commitment to public service. The Parkland tragedy is our current day Vietnam War – it is a civil war on our students in our schools.

Others will talk about common sense measures like assault rifle bans, bans on high capacity magazines and bump stocks and restricting those under the age of 21 from obtaining a firearm – none of this is enough.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has been prohibited from studying this issue since 1996.  A few weeks ago, Congress’ Omnibus Budget Bill granted the CDC the right to study gun violence prevention but did NOT fund it.

The second leading cause of death for those between the ages of 10 and 34 is suicide. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), more than half of these suicides are accomplished with a gun. A 48- or 72-hour waiting period for obtaining a gun may prevent some of these suicides. Some states make you wait 72 hours after obtaining a marriage license but not a to take a gun home?

Last week, results of a privately funded study conducted by BU School of Public Health concluded the following:

The study “shows that if states fail to act, they may actually be endangering the lives of residents of nearby states.”

We need national efforts to address gun violence and Congressmen and women who won’t back down to the NRA or Sig Sauer.

I will not back down to the NRA or other special interests and I will fight to end this civil war on our students. We need science, logic, and evidence to run Washington.

Please send $25, 50 or whatever you can today so I can fight this war.

Hope to talk to you soon!
